SUMEEQ understands that the aboriginal peoples are rebuilding their institutions of government and their communities. In this period of renewal many challenges face First Nations. It is not always easy, nor clear how to remove the legacy of decades of government intervention.
SUMEEQ assists First Nations and governments in meeting the goals of building strong First Nation communities and developing a new relationship based on the recognition of aboriginal and treaty rights.
SUMEEQ works with aboriginal communities and governments to identify priorities and mechanisms to achieve aboriginal self determination.
SUMEEQ moves away from the rhetoric of self-government and assists in building workable and realistic models of viable self-government.
SUMEEQ understands that real control and law-making authority in the hands of First Nations, brings with it increased responsibility. There is a corresponding need for First Nations’ Government officials and leaders to consider the implications of increased local responsibilities and to establish mechanisms for delivery of services.
SUMEEQ offers an experienced and professional team with extensive administrative and negotiating skills and first hand experience in developing practical self-government models, negotiating treaties and concluding financial arrangements including taxation agreements.
SUMEEQ provides primary research to assist First Nations in the development of policies and procedures that meet community needs and contribute to successful administration of First Nations’ governments.
SUMEEQ conducts ongoing analysis of policies that impact First Nations. This knowledge can assist First Nations in designing effective tools to carry out their governance responsibilities. This analysis also supports lobbying external governments to design policies supportive of the aspirations of First Nations.
SUMEEQ recognizes that relationships with external governments represent an important function of modern First Nations’ governments. Our team’s experience will help First Nations in establishing intergovernmental relationships which recognize aboriginal rights.
SUMEEQ develops workplans, job descriptions, local programs and policies for First Nations’ administrations to effectively and efficiently deliver local services to community members and businesses.
